The official artifact of the Małopolska Region is the salt sculpture “The Crown of Polish Kings.” This work, created by miner-sculptor Jan Banaś, was made from various types of salt extracted from the Royal Salt Mine in Wieliczka to mark the Millennium of the Kingdom of Poland, 1025–2025.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine, located near the former capital of Poland – Kraków, is one of the country’s most valuable historic sites and was inscribed on the First UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. It attracts tourists with its unique underground architecture, including majestic chambers carved out of salt, salt sculptures, and spectacular chapels.
